I'm new to functional programming and I just don't get this stuff. The whole idea of recursively doing everything and not having command after command just boggles my mind. How do ppl program like this?!?!??! arhgghehahd. If anyone can give me a hand, it would be much appreciated ;)

recursive functions can be a major debugging headache, I prefere a more structured functional approach, to much chance a recursive function will go into an endless loop. functions rule. Not familar wih ML, but most programmings the same. what exactly is it your having problems with.
Are you familar with the 'static' function declaration?

static functions in C++? yes, sort of. i've never really seen a need for them that reaped large benefits.

might be worth taking a look at <a href='http://www.dcs.napier.ac.uk/course-notes/sml/manual.html' target='_blank'>A gentle introduction to ML</a>. Doesn't really look like anything special, just a slightly different way of doing things which looks to me to be done much more efficiently in languages such as C and perl.
